Credit Check Online Kenya: Everything You Need to Know
Updated April 2026 • 6 min read
A credit check in Kenya means querying one or more of Kenya's three licensed Credit Reference Bureaus (CRBs) to find out your current credit status. You can now do this entirely online — no bank visit, no government office. Here is the complete guide.
What Is a Credit Check?
A credit check is a query of your credit data held at a licensed CRB. It returns information about your loan history, current outstanding debt, payment behaviour, and whether you have any negative listings (defaults).
There are two types:
- Soft check (consumer self-check): when you check your own report. Does not affect your credit score.
- Hard check (lender query): when a lender queries the bureau before approving a loan. This is recorded as an enquiry and can marginally affect your score.
When Should You Do a Credit Check?
- Before applying for a bank loan, mortgage, or SACCO loan
- Before applying for mobile credit (Fuliza, Mshwari, Branch, Tala)
- Before applying for a job that requires CRB clearance
- Before submitting a government tender
- After settling a debt to confirm the listing has been removed
- Annually, as part of good financial health monitoring

Credit Check vs. Clearance Certificate
An online credit check (or credit report) tells you your status. A clearance certificate is a formal official document issued by a bureau confirming no negative listings — required by employers and tender boards. If you just need to know your status, a credit check is sufficient. If you need to present something officially, get a clearance certificate directly from the bureau.
