How to Know Your CRB Listing Status in Kenya
Updated April 2026 • 4 min read
Your CRB listing status is a specific summary of how you appear in the Credit Reference Bureau database — positive, negative, or no record at all. Here is what each status means and how to find yours.
The Three CRB Listing Statuses in Kenya
Positive Listing
You have taken loans and repaid them on time. Lenders view this favourably. Your credit access is unrestricted.
Negative Listing
You have defaulted on at least one loan. Lenders may reject future applications. Clearance is required.
No Record
No lender has submitted data about you. You are a "thin file" borrower — limited credit access due to no history.
How to Check Your Listing Status
The fastest way is via crbcheck.co.ke: sign up, choose the Listing Status plan (KES 200), pay via M-Pesa, and your status is displayed within minutes. This gives you a clear "positive", "negative", or "no record" result without needing to read a full credit report.
Alternatively, dial *433# on Safaricom (Metropol CRB) or use the TransUnion Kenya consumer portal for a free annual check.
What Does a "Negative Listing Status" Include?
A negative listing status typically shows:
- The name of the lender who reported the default
- The type of financial facility (personal loan, mobile loan, credit card)
- The outstanding amount at the time of default
- The date the default was reported
- The current status (outstanding, settled, disputed)
How to Change a Negative Listing Status to Positive
- Repay the debt in full and get a clearance letter from the lender.
- Request the lender to notify the CRB to update your record.
- Wait 30–90 days and recheck your listing status.
- Once the debt is cleared, your listing should move from "negative" to "settled" or "positive".
