How Often Should You Check Your CRB Report in Kenya?
Updated April 2026 • 5 min read
Many Kenyans go years without ever checking their CRB credit report — until they are denied a loan or a job. Proactive credit monitoring is one of the smartest financial habits you can build. Here is the recommended frequency and the best times to check.
The Minimum: Once a Year (Free)
Under CBK regulations, every Kenyan is entitled to one free credit report per year from each licensed bureau. At a minimum, you should claim this free report once a year to:
- Confirm all personal information is correct
- Verify all accounts listed are genuinely yours
- Ensure there are no unexpected negative listings
- Check your credit score trend over the year
- Catch any identity fraud early
Claim your free annual report from TransUnion, Metropol, and CreditInfo separately. They may hold different information.
Recommended: Quarterly Checks
For those who are actively managing credit or planning major financial moves, checking your CRB status quarterly (every 3 months) is ideal. This frequency allows you to:
- Detect and dispute errors before they cause damage
- Track the impact of your financial behaviour on your score
- Monitor removal of resolved listings
Triggered Checks: When Specific Events Happen
Beyond regular monitoring, there are specific life events that should trigger an immediate CRB check:
Before Applying for a Loan or Mortgage
Check at least 60 days before applying. This gives you time to correct any errors or resolve any outstanding listings before your lender queries the bureau.
After Repaying a Loan
Wait 30–45 days after full repayment, then check to confirm the account is marked as "closed" and any previous overdue status has been corrected.
After a Debt Settlement
If you settled a defaulted debt, check 30–45 days after the CRB was notified to confirm the negative listing has been removed.
Before a Job Application (Finance/Government Sector)
Check before applying for any role that requires a CRB clearance certificate. If you have an unexpected listing, you want time to resolve it before the employer does their check.
Before a Tender Submission
Government tenders usually require clearance certificates from all three bureaus. Check your status at all three well before the tender deadline.
If You Suspect Identity Fraud
Check immediately if you notice unfamiliar enquiries on your report, receive unexpected loan repayment demands from a lender you have not dealt with, or suspect your ID details have been compromised.
Does Checking Your Own Report Hurt Your Credit Score?
No. When YOU check your own credit report, it is recorded as a "soft enquiry" which has no effect on your credit score. Only "hard enquiries" — when a lender queries your report as part of a credit application — can marginally affect your score.
You can check your own report as often as you like without penalty.
How to Set Up Ongoing Monitoring
Metropol CRB offers free credit monitoring alerts via SMS (after registering at metropol.co.ke). You will receive an SMS notification whenever:
- A lender queries your report
- A new account is opened under your name
- A negative listing is submitted
This is a free service and is one of the most effective tools for early fraud detection.
