How Do You Know You Are on CRB in Kenya? Signs & Confirmation

Updated April 2026 • 5 min read

Many Kenyans suspect they might be CRB listed but are not sure. Maybe your mobile loan application was declined, or a colleague mentioned you "look CRB". This article explains the warning signs and the only reliable way to confirm your status.

Warning Signs You May Be CRB Listed

These are common indicators that you may have a negative CRB listing:

1. Your Fuliza Limit Dropped to Zero

Safaricom's Fuliza overdraft uses CRB data among other factors to determine eligibility and limits. If your Fuliza limit suddenly drops to zero or you receive a message saying you are not eligible, a CRB listing is one possible reason. However, Safaricom's internal risk scoring can also affect limits independently.

2. M-Shwari or KCB M-Pesa Declined Your Application

If you try to borrow from M-Shwari or KCB M-Pesa and receive an "ineligible" or "not qualified" message despite having a good M-Pesa usage history, a CRB negative listing is a likely cause.

3. A Bank Loan Was Rejected Citing Credit Reasons

If a bank loan application is rejected and the bank cites "adverse credit information" or "CRB issues" as the reason, you are listed.

4. You Received a Notification from a Lender

Under CBK regulations, lenders are supposed to notify borrowers before submitting a negative listing to the CRB. If you received an SMS or letter from a lender warning you about a pending CRB listing, act immediately — repay the debt before they submit the report.

5. You Know You Have an Unpaid Loan

If you know you have an unpaid mobile loan, missed SACCO repayments, or a defaulted bank loan from more than 90 days ago, there is a high probability you are already listed, especially if the lender's loan recovery calls have stopped.

Signs That Are NOT Reliable Indicators

Some things people assume mean they are CRB listed — but often do not:

  • "I heard from a friend..." — Rumours are not evidence. Only your own credit report confirms your status.
  • Being rejected for one loan — Loan rejections happen for many reasons (income level, age, loan size, lender criteria) unrelated to CRB.
  • Low Fuliza limit — Fuliza limits are influenced by multiple factors. A low limit does not always mean a CRB listing.

The Only Way to Know for Certain: Get Your CRB Report

Warning signs are indicators — not confirmation. The only definitive way to know whether you are CRB listed is to get your official credit report from a licensed CRB.

Get yours instantly at crbcheck.co.ke:

  1. Sign up with your name, national ID, phone number, and email.
  2. Choose your report type (Listing Status for KES 200, or Full Credit Report for KES 300).
  3. Pay via M-Pesa STK push.
  4. Your report is delivered immediately.

Your report will clearly show:

  • Whether you have any negative listings and which lender submitted them
  • The outstanding amount per listing
  • Your full credit facility history

What If You Are Listed?

If your report shows a negative listing:

  1. Confirm whether the listing is valid (is the debt genuine?) or incorrect (file a dispute).
  2. If valid, repay the debt, get a lender clearance letter, and follow up for the CRB record to update.
  3. Check back in 30–90 days to confirm your record is updated.

What If You Are NOT Listed?

Good news. But this is not a reason to become complacent. Check your report annually to:

  • Catch any unexpected listings immediately
  • Verify your positive credit history is being recorded correctly
  • Protect against identity theft (someone may take a loan in your name)
