Fuliza and CRB: What You Need to Know About Listings & Clearance
Updated April 2026 • 6 min read
Fuliza is Safaricom's M-Pesa overdraft facility — one of the most widely used micro-credit products in Kenya. Millions of Kenyans use it daily for small, short-term borrowing. But many don't realise that Fuliza overdrafts can lead to a negative CRB listing if left unpaid. Here is everything you need to know.
Does Fuliza Report to CRB?
Yes. Safaricom, through its Fuliza and M-Pesa financial services, reports loan data to credit reference bureaus in Kenya. This means:
- Unpaid Fuliza balances can result in a negative CRB listing
- Consistently repaid Fuliza usage can contribute positively to your credit history
How Does a Fuliza Default Happen?
Fuliza works as an automatic overdraft on your M-Pesa account — it kicks in when you do not have enough M-Pesa balance to complete a transaction. The amount borrowed, plus a daily fee, must be repaid from future M-Pesa deposits. A default typically occurs when:
- You have a large Fuliza balance that remains unpaid for an extended period (usually 30+ days)
- The account accumulates daily charges making the balance grow beyond your ability to repay
- Safaricom submits the account as "Non-Performing" to the CRB
How Long Before Fuliza Lists You on CRB?
Safaricom does not list immediately. The general process:
- Fuliza balance is used and not repaid
- Daily charges accrue for 30+ days
- Account classified as non-performing after approximately 90 days of non-payment
- Lender submits negative listing to CRB after the non-performing classification
However, Safaricom also suspends your Fuliza access (and may restrict some M-Pesa services) once you have an outstanding balance above your limit — well before any CRB submission.
How to Clear a Fuliza CRB Listing
- Start by checking your CRB report to confirm whether a Fuliza listing exists (check at crbcheck.co.ke for KES 300)
- Check your current Fuliza balance by dialling *234# on Safaricom
- Repay the outstanding Fuliza balance — it is automatically deducted from any M-Pesa deposit you receive
- Request a debt clearance letter from Safaricom once fully paid
- Submit the clearance letter to the relevant CRB and request de-listing
- Follow up to confirm the negative listing has been removed (check your report again)
How Fuliza Affects Your Credit Score
| Fuliza Behaviour | CRB Impact |
|---|---|
| Regular use, repaid promptly each time | Builds positive payment history — good for score |
| Balance growing but being managed (partial repayments) | Neutral to slightly negative — high utilisation |
| Unpaid balance for 30–89 days | Negative — late payment marker may appear |
| Unpaid for 90+ days / submitted as NPL | Severe negative — CRB listing, major score drop |
Can a Fuliza CRB Listing Affect Bank Loans?
Yes. Any negative CRB listing —including from Fuliza — will appear on your credit report when a bank or lender checks your credit. Most banks will decline a loan application if there is an active negative listing, regardless of the source or the amount.
Tips for Managing Fuliza Responsibly
- Know your Fuliza limit and always stay well below it
- Repay Fuliza as soon as you make your next M-Pesa deposit — do not let balances run
- Avoid using Fuliza for non-essential purchases if you're uncertain about repayment timing
- If balances are running high, repay aggressively before the 90-day NPL threshold
