How to Check CRB Status After Loan Repayment in Kenya
Updated April 2026 • 5 min read
You have repaid your loan — congratulations! But until your CRB record is officially updated, you may still face credit rejections. After any loan repayment, especially one where you had a default, it is essential to verify that your CRB status reflects the change.
Why Check CRB Status After Repayment?
Lenders are supposed to update the CRB within 30 days of a loan being repaid or a dispute being resolved. However, this does not always happen automatically or on time. Without checking, you may assume your record is clean while lenders are still seeing an old negative listing.
How Long Does It Take for CRB to Update After Repayment?
- Standard update: 30–90 days after the lender submits a clearance notice to the CRB.
- Expedited update: If you provide the lender with a formal clearance request letter, they may update within 2 weeks.
- Digital lenders (Tala, Branch, M-Shwari): Updates may be faster — sometimes within 7–14 days of repayment.
Steps to Follow After Repaying a Loan
- Get a repayment receipt or confirmation — Download or screenshot your M-Pesa payment confirmation and request a formal loan clearance letter from the lender.
- Request the lender to update the CRB — Ask your lender in writing (email or letter) to submit a clearance notice to the CRB within 30 days.
- Wait 30–90 days — Give the CRB time to update your record.
- Check your CRB status — After the waiting period, request a new report via crbcheck.co.ke or directly from the bureau to confirm the update.
What If the Negative Listing Is Still Showing?
If 90 days have passed since your repayment and your report still shows a negative listing:
- Contact the lender with proof of payment and demand they submit an update to the CRB immediately.
- Lodge a formal dispute with the CRB directly (TransUnion, Metropol, or CreditInfo). They must investigate within 30 business days.
- If unresolved, escalate to the Central Bank of Kenya (CBK) which regulates CRBs.
How to Check Your CRB Status Post-Repayment
Use crbcheck.co.ke (KES 200, instant via M-Pesa) to verify your current status. You can see all listings and their current state. If the lender has updated your record, the negative listing will show as "Settled" or will be removed entirely.
